Gear Up For Dodgers Baseball

How the West is Being Won

San Diego Padres vs Los Angeles Dodgers - May 3, 2009

If the Los Angeles Dodgers keep beating up on National League West opponents, they should have the division wrapped up by the end of May.

No, seriously.

While the Dodgers are finding different ways to win games—ugly or otherwise—the rest of the division is a joke. Recently, they even had Elmo from Sesame Street start a game.

Nah, just kidding. But they could probably get away with it.

Maybe the San Francisco Giants can make things interesting now that they’re giving their cadre of great starting pitchers some support.

But, for now, the Dodgers are unbeatable at home and boast the best record in Major League Baseball at 19-8, with a .285 batting average and a +46 run differential, which is simply vulgar—especially when you consider that Russell Martin (.224) and Casey Blake (.222) are dragging that average down.

Manny Ramirez is doing exactly what he’s being paid to do, driving in runs with doubles and home runs.

Andre Ethier has been simply unconscious. Everyone was expecting ‘Dre to have a breakout year, but he’s putting together massive numbers now.

When Matt Kemp isn’t chasing everything down in center field, he’s swinging a mighty bat.

And how about that top of the order? Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson are just making it unfair for opposing pitchers.

Of course, the Dodgers have faced mostly NL West opponents so far. The real test is coming later this month, when the Dodgers head east for series against the Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins before returning home to face the New York Mets.

Until then, the Dodgers need to continue this destruction of the NL West. Because, if the cynics are right and the Dodgers fall apart against opponents outside their division, they’re going to need a big lead to cushion their fall.
