Gear Up For Dodgers Baseball

Thirteen Nights of Randy Newman

San Diego Padres vs Los Angeles Dodgers - May 3, 2009

With a 10-3 shellacking of the hapless Washington Natinals (oops, I meant Nationals), the Los Angeles Dodgers won their 13th consecutive game at home to start the season, breaking the modern-day Major League Baseball record that was held by the Detroit Tigers at Bennett Park, in 1911.

For those that don’t know, every time the Dodgers win, Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” blares over the speakers at Dodger Stadium, and whatever is left of the crowd sings along merrily.

After 13 nights of “I Love L.A.,” it has been burned into my soul. I probably sing it in my sleep.

Into the second month of the season, the Dodgers carry MLB’s best record at 20-8 and are 5 1/2 games beyond the rival San Francisco Giants.

It’s amazing what the Dodgers are doing. They have exceeded already-heightened expectations and setting this new record makes their run of success all the more chest-thumping fun for Dodgers fans.

Yeah, yeah, they still have to face stronger opponents from the NL Central and East, but, they’re off to a tremendous start.

That’s not to say there aren’t some hiccups.

Although Russell Martin is showing signs of finally breaking out of his batting funk, Casey Blake has been dreadful at the plate. “Beard” needs to finally get on the same page as the rest of the team.

That bullpen has its days when they absolutely shut down anything that comes to bat. Then, there are some days when you just want to rip your hair out. Ronald Belisario might account for a few more ulcers in the L.A. area this season. There are some times when it seems he doesn’t belong in the league. It’s the same with Will Ohman, who lapses into spells of silliness on the mound from time to time.

Ironically, the biggest question mark in the bullpen at the start of the season, Jonathan Broxton, has been the most consistent. He’s no Éric Gagné, but when he comes in, Randy Newman is already warming up the band.

The Dodgers have another game with the Natinals before the evil San Francisco Giants bring their empty World Series trophy case to town. Yeah, that’s right—the evil, trophy-less SanFran Giants. With the Dodgers heads-and-shoulders above the rest of the division, someone has to inject some degree of friction into that rivalry.

Honestly, if anyone is to finally beat the Dodgers at home, it will most likely be the Giants.

Well…the Dodgers can’t win every home game this season, right?

Right?

Randy Newman in my head…can’t sleep.
