Blake DeWitt: Dodgers Newest Second Baseman or April Fools’ Joke?

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Los Angeles Dodgers

Yesterday Joe Torre and Ned Colleti sat DeWitt down and told him they were sending him to Albuquerque, but it was just a little April Fools’ day fun.  The fact is that the promotion is no joke, the good old boy from Sikeston, Missouri is the Dodgers newest starting second baseman.  I wasn’t too surprised when I read this because the fact is the kid can play.  This is the second time in his career he’ll make an opening day roster, but the first time he has actually earned the spot.  Back in 2008 injuries to Nomar Garciaparra, Andy LaRoche and Tony Abreu forced the decision to make him the starting third baseman.  Although he won the spot in 2008 by default he made the most of it and I’m sure earned a spot in many Dodger fans hearts.  DeWitt opened up the season against the Giants hitting 5-9 with 3 walks and singled off of Barry Zito his very first at bat.

Although he does have some pop with his bat, I’m truly a fan of his glove.  I would go as far as to say that he could be a gold glove third baseman, which is why I’m very curious to see how he’ll do with the move to second base.  He has great hands but lacks the speed to be a great middle infielder.  Obviously the Dodgers aren’t going to move Casey Blake, but I ask the question who do you think is the better third baseman?
